Tax season might feel far away, but a new rule taking effect in 2026 could change how you think about charitable giving, even if you've never itemized a deduction in your life.

A new rule for 2026

Starting with the 2026 tax year, there's a new reason to consider giving to causes you care about, even if you don't itemize deductions on your tax return. Beginning with tax year 2026, taxpayers who do not itemize may deduct up to $1,000 in cash contributions to qualified charitable organizations ($2,000 if filing jointly). Previously, charitable deductions were only available to taxpayers who itemized on Schedule A, which left out many donors who take the standard deduction.

What this means for you

If you've ever wanted to support a cause but assumed your donation "wouldn't count" on your taxes unless you itemized, that's no longer entirely true starting in 2026. A donation to Neighbors for Schools, Inc., a Georgia 501(c)(3) public charity, may now be deductible even if you take the standard deduction.

What to keep in mind

For any cash donation, keep a record, a bank statement or a written acknowledgment from the organization with the name, amount, and date of the contribution. For donations of $250 or more, you'll need a written acknowledgment from the organization itself. Neighbors for Schools provides a donation receipt for every contribution, so you'll have what you need either way.

This rule applies specifically to cash contributions to qualified organizations. Gifts to individuals don't qualify, and donors should confirm an organization's tax-exempt status before assuming a contribution is deductible.
